Face Mask

What is Face Mask

A face mask is a covering that you wear over your face, for example to prevent yourself from breathing bad air or from spreading germs, or to protect your face when you are in a dangerous situation.

Advantages of Face Mask

Prevent droplet spread

When you go out wearing a mask, the layers of fabric act as a filter to keep most of those aerosols from reaching those around you. Masks that cover your mouth and nose prevent droplets from traveling as far so fewer of them reach other people or the surfaces around you to infect others.

Protect you and those around you

Face masks are also very useful when in closed, crowded and confined spaces with poor ventilation.Spring and summer are the seasons when people come together socially more often, there are more large-scale public events, and people move around the country in bigger numbers.During this time of year, we encourage you to wear a face mask when on public transport, around crowds of people, and when you have close contact with someone else, such as during face-to-face conversations.

Good fit

Can increase protection of your fabric face mask by adding a 'filter layer' and a nose bridge wire to mould the face mask to your face. A filter layer could be a specific face mask filter or a cut-down disposable face mask to add to a face mask pocket.

Shape also matters

A mask's ability to filter out particles depends on not just what it's made out of but how well it seals to your face. Masks with pleats or folds are also a good choice: The folds expand so that you have more air flowing through the fabric itself instead of leaking out through gaps at the sides of the mask.

Types of Face Mask

Cloth Masks
In non-health care settings, multiple-layer fabric cloth masks are excellent barriers for containing respiratory droplets and interrupting viral transmission if they are worn consistently and properly, covering the nose and mouth.

Procedural and Surgical Masks
These are loose-fitting masks designed to cover the mouth and nose. Medical grade surgical or procedural masks provide excellent protection due to their filtration and fluid resistance. A simple "knot and tuck" technique can be used to improve the fit of rectangular surgical or procedural masks. This video from the CDC demonstrates this technique.

N95s and Other Respirators
N95 respirators offer a higher level of filtration than cloth, surgical or procedural masks. However, they are not necessary to protect people from the virus under normal circumstances. In order to be optimally effective, respirators must be fit-tested and worn properly, tightly fitted against the person's face.

Face Shields
A face shield is a piece of rigid, transparent plastic attached to a headband. The plastic piece covers the face, extending below the chin.

Here are the basics of how to wear a mask

Clean your hands before you put your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.
Make sure it covers both your nose, mouth and chin.
When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it's a fabric mask, or dispose of a medical mask in a trash bin.
Don't use masks with valves.

How do I wash my cloth face mask?

Masks made of fabric, such as cotton, can be washed in your regular laundry using hot water.

Disposable, blue surgical masks cannot be laundered or cleaned and should be thrown away when they are visibly soiled or damaged.

After laundering your fabric masks, tumble dry them in the dryer on a high setting.

You might consider using a nonscented laundry detergent if you are sensitive to perfumes, so it is easier to wear masks.

You can also hand-wash your mask, using hot, soapy water. Scrub the mask for at least 20 seconds and dry it on high heat in the dryer.

Store clean masks in a clean place when you are not using them.

Polypropylene Respirator Mask

What to look for in a face mask material

Disposable Nonwoven Respirator

1. Use woven fabrics over knits. The tighter the weave, the better the protection, as long as you can breathe.

2. Avoid porous materials and those with large openings.

3. Use multiple layers of material. Just make sure you can still breathe adequately.

4. Don't pay extra for antimicrobial interiors. There's not much research to support its value.Avoid fabrics treated with bleach and harsh chemicals.

5. Try a tie-on design for a more customizable, comfortable fit.

6. Consider adding a HEPA filter to boost your masks's filtration. Just make sure it doesn't come in direct contact with your mouth.

What are blue surgical masks made

Masks are a type of personal protective equipment (PPE), along with face shields, protective eye goggles, gloves, gowns, and other equipment. Proper use of PPE can help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Wearing PPE is a risk reduction measure, not a risk avoidance measure, so masks can help lower (but not completely eliminate) the chances of getting infected or infecting someone else. Maintaining hygiene, physical distancing, and other measures are still recommended.

There has been uncertainty around the safety of blue surgical masks and who should be wearing them. However, wearing surgical masks is safe and protective against COVID-19 when used properly.Blue surgical face masks are made with non-woven fabric, which has been shown to have better bacteria filtration and airflow than woven cloth.

The material most commonly used to make these masks is polypropylene—a type of fabric made from a "thermoplastic" polymer (meaning that it's easy to work with and shape at high temperatures). Blue surgical masks can also be made of polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, or polyester— all of which are types of fabrics derived from thermoplastic polymers.

To be completely sure of the safety of a surgical mask, it helps to know where it came from . If you are concerned about any potential allergic reactions to surgical face masks, another great option is to purchase or create your own cloth mask, as long as it is made out of cotton or linen, has at least two layers of fabric, covers your nose, and mouth, and has ear loops.

FAQ

Q: What are the benefits of wearing a face mask?

A: Other than preventing or lowering the risk of germ spread, wearing a mask is beneficial in offering protection from pollution and allergens. Here's what else you need to know, including who should wear masks, which masks work best, and how to wear your mask properly.

Q: What is the main purpose of wearing a face mask?

A: Recommendations. Face masks (or other face coverings that cover your mouth and nose) are one of the most effective measures that help reduce spreading of the virus. The face covering helps to avoid spreading of the virus by stopping the respiratory droplets which contain viral particles.

Q: Is it good to wear a face Mask Everyday?

A: It comes down to your skin type, your individual skin needs, and the kind of mask you're using. Some masks are best used once per week, while others can be used more frequently, up to 3 times per week. The easiest thing to do is read the instructions on the label or packaging that comes with your face mask.

Q: Do masks help with air quality?

A: If you need to be outside, N95 masks are the best option to reduce your exposure to pollutants, according to , but if you don't have those, surgical masks or even a scarf is better than nothing.

Q: Do masks help with allergies?

A: A mask acts like a barrier. It can block some of the particles in the air - such as allergens, pollution, and viruses - and keep them from getting into your nose, mouth, and lungs. It may help reduce asthma and allergy symptoms and protect you from getting sick or spreading an illness.

Q: Which mask is best for air pollution?

A: A mask labeled N95/FFP2/KN95 is a solid choice, but for really polluted cities, we recommend you search for a mask that filters 99% of airborne particles labeled N99/FFP3/KN99. Because of the COVID pandemic, these masks are now widely available.

Q: Do masks block pollen?

A: Medical masks, such as N95 masks, are even more effective, catching particles only 0.04 micrometers in size. Even cloth masks with multiple layers will protect you from most pollen. Keep in mind that masks offer no protection for people with eye allergies (allergic conjunctivitis).

Q: Do masks protect from sneezing?

A: Wearing a mask will offer substantial, but not complete, protection to a susceptible person by decreasing the number of foreign airborne sneeze and cough droplets that would otherwise enter the person without the mask.

Q: What mask is best for mold?

A: The N95, N99 and the N100 are the only masks that are known to offer protection against toxic exposure to mold.

Q: What mask is best for dead body smell?

A: Depending on the length of exposure, a disposable respirator or dust mask with a layer of activated charcoal might be sufficient. The Moldex N95 2400 mask (which comes in a box of 10) is perfect if your exposure to the decaying flesh isn't terribly long, say less than an hour.

Q: Which mask is best for dust?

A: FFRs, commonly called dust masks are another type of negative pressure air purifying respirator. FFRs have a lighter design than half-mask respirators. The entire mask is fabricated from filter material that covers the mouth and nose.

Q: Why do surgeons wear masks?

A: Most obviously, they can act as a physical barrier against blood and bodily fluid splashes during surgery. One prospective study revealed that facemasks prevented blood/bodily fluid splashes that would have otherwise contaminated the surgeon's face in 24% of procedures.

Q: Can mold go through face mask?

A: What is the difference between a respirator and a surgical mask? Respirators are not the same as surgical masks. Surgical masks do not protect against breathing in very small particles such as dust or mold because they do not fit tightly to the face, allowing air particles to leak in around the edge of the mask.

Q: How can I protect my lungs from mold?

A: If there is mold in your home (or you suspect that mold growth has occurred), protect your mouth and nose against breathing in mold by wearing at least a disposable, NIOSH-approved N-95 filtering facepiece respirator (often called an “N-95 respirator” or “N-95 mask” ).

Q: What mask gives the most oxygen?

A: A non-rebreather mask is an oxygen mask that delivers high concentrations of oxygen. It's for when a person needs oxygen quickly in emergencies like injury, smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Q: What mask do firefighters wear?

A: Wildland firefighters - whose mission requires deploying to remote locations - often use bandanas and N95 masks for protection due to their light weight and small size.

Q: What is a P3 mask?

A: P3 masks offer the highest levels of filtration, they are also commonly known as Asbestos masks. They are suitable for use in dangerous work areas where there is a risk of inhalation of dangerous substances, such as working with asbestos or chemicals.

Q: What is the best mask for haze?

A: N95 is still the best mask out there and recommended by most if not all professionals for haze purposes. N95 can filter 95% against particles that are about 0.1 micron to 0.3 micron. In other words, N95 is very effective in filtering fine particles.

Q: What mask is best for dust?

A: True respirator masks such as N95 respirators are designed to protect the wearer from airborne particles and from liquid contaminating the face. They filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles such as dust, mists and fumes.

Q: What does P1 mean on a mask?

A: P1 respirators are typically used for work environments with low levels of dust. P1 will not protect the wearer from extremely fine particles but rather from larger particles generated through grinding, cutting, sanding, or drilling. A P1 mask will also protect the wearer from: Liquid and solid aerosols.
